U.S. Buses Recalled for Dangers of Sudden Fires and Unexpected Stalls

Posted on Nov 26, 2011

Motor Coach Industries announced the bus recall of model year 2010 through 2011 D4505 motor coaches manufactured between May 1, 2010 and October 1, 2011. More than 100 buses are subject to the recall. The recall results from a product defect in the electrical system of the Penntex alternator generator regulator.

The alternators could collect moisture at the power stud. The adverse moisture retention could result in corrosion buildup at and around the power stud base that could, in turn, create a short circuit between the power stud and the alternator itself.

The short circuit could lead to burning of the power stud or power cable and increase the risk of a fire. The defect could also cause the motor coach battery to discharge and suddenly stall the bus, possibly leading to dangerous accidents.

Motor Coach Industries says it will modify the alternator installation without charge. However, Motor Coach Industries has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. In the meantime, your safety is at risk should you be a passenger on any of these motor coaches.

The motor coach - passenger bus industry has come under increasing fire from regulatory authorities for safety violations and blatant disregard of safety standards. The emphasis on profits over safety has led to some disastrous bus crashes with multiple fatalities in recent years.
