Two Passengers Die When Taxicab Slams into Stalled Tanker Truck in Houston
Posted on Aug 05, 2011
Authorities charged taxi driver David Houston with criminally negligent homicide after the cab he was driving allegedly swerved onto the shoulder of the Eastex Freeway and struck a stalled tanker truck, killing the two occupants of his cab. The victims, Sandra Smart and Dorothy Britton, were both METROLift kidney dialysis patients. Reports of the tragedy say that witnesses told police that the cab had been speeding and weaving through rush hour traffic prior to impacting the stalled fuel-laden truck.
We offer our heart-felt condolences to the families of the victims. The two women were kidney dialysis patients. They used the METROLift cab service because disability prevented them from safely driving or using the bus system. How terrible to lose your loved ones unexpectedly to a disastrous accident when they're in transit for life-saving medical treatments.
Accidents can happen at almost any time. But this tragedy might have been prevented. Photos of the accident scene show the stalled truck on the shoulder of the freeway, barely out of the way of adjacent traffic. These photos show no warning cones or other signs in place to warn approaching vehicles, like the METROLift cab, of imminent danger. And if witness accounts are correct, perhaps a slower, more careful progress through Friday's rush hour traffic might have enabled the cab driver to avoid the stalled tanker. Our hearts ache for the victims and their friends and families who are suffering because of this unforeseen accident.
