Trucker Falls Asleep & Causes Fiery Crash on Hwy 290 in NW Houston, TX

Posted on Oct 01, 2011

A fatigued truck driver, traveling into Houston from El Paso about 2 a.m. on Highway 290 on Thursday, fell asleep at the wheel. His rig crashed into a guardrail and a concrete barrier at Gessner Road, and the truck cab exploded into flames from a fuel leak. More fuel leaked onto the highway, resulting in additional flames.

The force of the impact woke the fatigued truck driver, who dashed from his cab to safety before it exploded into a fireball. The fire burned the truck cab all the way down to the frame, but firefighters successfully doused the blaze. The eastbound lanes of Highway 290 remained closed for 8 hours while workers cleared and investigated the scene of the fiery truck crash. Investigators indicated that the results of their investigation could result in a traffic citation for the fatigued truck driver.

News accounts of the incident don't specify the source of the truck driver's fatigue. The cause of his falling asleep behind the wheel could have been sleep apnea. Or it might simply have been a long haul from El Paso on congested Texas roadways without sufficient rest breaks.

We're glad to hear that the fatigued truck driver safely escaped the fiery crash, and that fortunately no one else was injured in the incident. Too many Texas truck wrecks end in tragedy.
