At about 8:30 a.m. on July 29, an eighteen-wheel truck crashed into the Bayou Pierre in Texas City. The wreck occurred when the empty truck, which normally carries used grease, hit the guardrail in a construction zone in the 4300 block of the expressway and fell into the bayou.
The police report that the driver of the truck owned by Liquid Environmental Solutions lost control when he made the detour to the expressway feeder road. The police cited the truck driver for speeding. The driver sustained minor injuries.
It took nearly six hours and the help of several crews, including the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the Texas General Land Office Oil Spill Response Crew, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas City Fire and Police departments, the Texas-New Mexico Power, and AT&T, to clean up the wreck site and pull the truck from the bayou. Although the truck was empty, it was necessary to take precautions to ensure that oil leakage did not occur.
Even though the truck wreck was the first since construction began, there was previous concern about whether danger existed for drivers who failed to slow down when exiting to the feeder.
