Texas No Refusal Policy Serves as Model for Other States' Enforcement
Posted on Nov 11, 2011
Our Galveston, TX accident lawyers were pleased to learn that the Texas "no refusal" policy focused on taking drunk drivers off our Texas roads serves as a model for other states in their DWI enforcement efforts. A recent news article out of the Chicago, IL area describes the results of a "no refusal" DWI enforcement sweep on Halloween night.
The no refusal program, which local authorities say was modeled on the Texas program, netted 7 drunk drivers in Kane County. The news report says that the six prior implementations of the no refusal policy netted 54 drunk drivers.
State's Attorney Joe McMahon, who authorized the program, says he believes the no refusal policy proves effective in discouraging drunk drivers from taking to the roads. This helps ensure a safer holiday weekend for other users of the roads. Mr. McMahon is considering implementing the program on other holiday weekends as well.
Our Galveston, TX accident lawyers agree that prevention and enforcement efforts that enhance road safety help provide a successful solution to the endemic problem of drunk driving. We've seen far too many catastrophic injuries from disastrous drunk driving accidents. Our clients have included many family members grieving from the loss of a family member to a heedless drunk driver. If wider use of no refusal enforcement policies can have a positive effect on preventing their pain and such needless tragedies, we fully support the expansion of their use.
