Texas is Burning - the Deadly Wildfires Have Destroyed More Than 2,000 Structures

Three-County Wildfire North of Houston, TX Rages On; City Under Blanket of Smoke

Some of the worst wildfires in Texas history continue to burn during a Texas summer that's now acknowledged as the hottest summer on record. The Texas wildfires compound Texans' woes during the worst single-year drought in Texas history. A three-county wildfire north of Houston, TX in Grimes, Waller and Montgomery Counties has defied heroic attempts to thoroughly contain it. Thousands of homes and business near Magnolia, TX received evacuation orders. Visibility and air quality in Houston itself continues to deteriorate as smoke drifts in from surrounding wildfires.

The three-county wildfire north of Houston, TX has already burned 12,000 acres and almost 100 structures. Recent reports indicate that East Texas now suffers the largest number of Texas wildfires. A converted DC-10 that can spill 12,000 gallons of flame retardant over a blaze could be deployed to help fight the Texas wildfires.

To the west, the huge wildfire in Bastrop County, TX that has claimed several Texans' lives has also consumed over 1,000 homes, including entire residential subdivisions. Displaced evacuees face the prospect of no homes to which to return. Even where the Texas wildfires don't burn down a building, they greatly increase the chances of structural collapse. So even the buildings that remain standing after the Bastrop County wildfires are out may be unsafe to enter. And hazards like downed power lines, lack of running water or electricity, hot spots, smoke, and charred utility poles and trees that could fall all present additional dangers of injury or fatality to those who return after the Texas wildfires burn out. Businesses and schools in Bastrop County remain shut down while the wildfire continues to burn. Reportedly, federal authorities are taking over firefighting efforts in Bastrop County and are turning away volunteer firefighters.

Continued hot, dry weather conditions across the state combine with winds to fan the flames. The Texas wildfires move quickly to consume available tinder, and right now, conditions across the state make Texas one big tinderbox. So everyone should remain vigilant regarding wildfire dangers, take the precautions against them that you can, and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
