Texas Good Samaritan killed on day of birthday party by drunk driver
Posted on Jan 05, 2012
The Conroe injury attorneys at Denena & Points were greatly saddened to hear of the tragic death of a generous Good Samaritan who had stopped to help someone in need on the way home from her 45th birthday party. Tammy Rhoades, driving home after celebrating her 45th birthday with friends, had stopped to help William Ramirez whose car had a flat tire.
Mr. Ramirez had stopped in a moving lane of traffic in a construction zone on I-45 in Montgomery County; the road had no shoulder at that point. Ms. Rhoades turned on her emergency hazard lights to alert other drivers to the danger from Mr. Ramirez's stalled vehicle.
21-year-old Tyler Shelton of Willis, driving a white 2008 pickup truck, failed to heed the emergency warning lights. Tyler Shelton slammed into Ms. Rhoades' Grand Am. The impact was so strong that it knocked the seats out of the car and pushed the stopped Grand Am into Mr. Ramirez's vehicle up ahead.
Ms. Rhoades was tragically killed at the scene where she had tried to aid Mr. Ramirez. Ms. Rhoades had set her own car's lights as a warning to try to prevent collisions.
Tyler Shelton was taken into custody and subjected to a mandatory blood draw. He's charged with intoxication manslaughter. Authorities are holding him on a $50,000 bond.
Our Conroe injury attorneys condole with the family and friends of Ms. Rhoades, needlessly killed by a drunken driver. It strikes us as particularly tragic that her life came to an untimely close as she was coming home from a birthday celebration. Her passing serves as yet another disheartening example of the extreme danger posed by heedless drunken drivers on our roads.
