Socorro, TX Street Racing Rollover Wreck Kills 1 Man & Critically Injures Another Man
On I-10 in Socorro, TX near the Clint exit, a rollover wreck claimed 1 young man's life and critically injured another. Witness accounts say that the dark green truck involved in the rollover wreck had been racing a car in the eastbound lanes of I-10. The truck, estimated to be traveling at a speed over 80 mph, then tried to take the I-10 exit ramp to Clint. Speed caused the truck to suddenly veer and roll off of the ramp back onto the I-10 freeway.
Neither the driver of the truck nor his passenger had on seat belts. The two young men in their 20s both got ejected from the truck as it rolled over on I-10. The driver of the truck died from the rollover wreck on his way to the hospital. The other young man was in critical condition.
A mother spotted the rollover wreck and recognized the dark green truck. She was looking for her son, whom she said had been with the two other men from the truck earlier in the day. Socorro police began looking for a third body at the scene of the wreck, but did not find one. News reports say that the police believe that the son was no longer with the two men in the truck at the time of the wreck.
Socorro police and El Paso County sheriffs closed off a 7-mile stretch of I-10 because of the rollover wreck. Another wreck resulted when a driver, reported as possibly DUI, ignored or failed to notice the road closures and rammed head-on into a parked police car. Fortunately, the police office was not in the car at the time of the accident and was able to jump safely out of the way. That same reckless driver also hit another vehicle that was trying to merge onto the frontage road because of the road closure.
David Garcia of the Socorro PD said that flares were out, police car lights were flashing, and a police office even had his flashlight out to help warn of the road closure. But that the possibly DUI wreck was the second within an hour at that location from the road closure incident. The drivers involved in the second accident received treatment for minor injuries at the scene. Both refused transport to hospitals.
We are saddened that Texas' street racing problem has claimed another life, and resulted in injuries to others. We hope that the mother searching for her son finds him well. Maybe he and others might draw a lesson from the rollover wreck to help them preserve their own lives. We are also relieved that the police officer that was trying to close the accident scene and warn others of the hazard was able to escape harm at the hands of the second driver that wrecked at the scene.
