Retired Flint Police Officer Dies in Tragic Houston Motorcycle Wreck - No Helmet

Posted on Aug 05, 2011

The Houston area suffered a tragic loss on Thursday, August 4, 2011 when a motorcycle accident claimed the life of retired Flint Police Officer Mr. Draike Sparks. Reports of the fatal motorcycle crash state that traffic came to a sudden stop in front of Mr. Sparks during the morning rush hour. He could not stop his Yamaha Road Star bike in time to avoid other traffic, so he swerved initially into a left emergency lane and then back into the traffic lane to the right. When his cycle's foot bars struck the road, the impact threw Mr. Sparks from his bike. Reports say that he was not wearing a helmet at the time.

We grieve with the family of Mr. Sparks. The loss of a peace officer is always a major blow to the community. And the loss of a man in the prime of his life can only leave his bereaved family and friends in shock at the tragic event.

Mr. Sparks served as a police officer and role model in life. His untimely end may also provide an example to serve and protect others in the future just as he did in life. Mr. Sparks suffered his fatal motorcycle crash while he was not wearing a helmet.

Texas helmet laws do not require bikers over 20 years of age to wear helmets while they ride. But studies consistently show that helmet use saves lives. The NHTSA statistics reveal that helmet use saves almost 2,000 motorcyclists' lives each year.

Our Clear Lake motorcycle accident attorneys want to express our sympathies to Mr. Sparks' family and friends. We also want to remind other motorcyclists out there to wear your helmets when you ride. Helmet use could save your life in the event of an unforeseen accident or an impact that ejects you from your bike. Houston area traffic is busy, fast and aggressive. Take all the precautions you can to keep yourself safe. Bikes are an economical and eco-friendly mode of transport, and bikers are generally a hip and cool group of folks. We don't want to lose you. Ride safe.
