Texas mourns the loss of two of its promising young people after a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV left the road and hit a concrete culvert. The SUV rolled over and came to rest upside down after its 33-year-old male driver fell asleep at the wheel. The SUV held 10 people returning home to San Antonio after a day at the beach. The vehicle held the driver's 31-year-old girlfriend and 8 children in addition to the drowsy driver.
Reports indicate that the woman was likely sitting on her buckled seatbelt rather than wearing it. The 8 children, all in the flattened back seat area at the time of the accident, wore no safety restraints. The crash ejected 2 of the children. The SUV came to rest upside down and crushed one young boy under its roof. A young girl died later at the hospital. The woman and other 6 children received treatment at area hospitals. The driver in the drowsy driving accident did not require hospitalization. Jacob Isaac Ricarte, 8, and his cousin Jelena Joli Robles, 2, died from the wreck.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the driver falling asleep at the wheel. Just from the report, it sounds like the group had a busy day. A trip from San Antonio for a day on the beach at Corpus, followed by shopping in Port Aransas, with a return trip to San Antonio that same day is enough to make anyone tired.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of two young lives in a Port Aransas, TX drowsy driving accident on a trip to our Coastal Bend area. The day should have given them a day of carefree fun in the sun. Losing a child presents the most devastating event a parent can face. We can only imagine the trauma the group continues to experience as they mourn their losses.

We sympathize with the suffering of these fellow Texans, and offer our sympathies. We only wish that we could offer them a way to undo their traumatic accident and experience better memories of the Coastal Bend region.
