One Killed, Four Injured in Texas Truck Wreck

Posted on Jan 07, 2011

One man was killed, while four others were injured, in a one-vehicle wreck last weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A Houston man, 85-year-old Maria Vela, was killed when the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck he was driving rolled over. Vela's four passengers were also injured in the crash.

According to the Department of Public Safety, Vela was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 59 near mile marker 604 when he lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over.

Vela was airlifted to Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, where he was pronounced dead at around 10:30 a.m., nearly four hours after the crash.

Passenger Ancelmo Vela, 92, of Houston, was airlifted to another hospital with critical injuries. Maria De Jesus Jaimes, 53, Alma Castro, 30, and 11-month-old Victor Aurioles were taken to a nearby medical center in stable condition.

Police have not released the details on what caused the accident. Our sympathies and thoughts go out to all of those who were involved.
