One person was killed, and two injured, in a bizarre Houston-area accident this week. The accident, which involved an on-duty member of the Houston Police Department, occurred around 1:00 AM Monday morning on South Braeswood.
Dr. Estela Medrano, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine and a recognized cancer researcher, was killed when a car being driven by her husband was struck by a police officer responding to a call. Her husband was also hospitalized after the crash, but it is not yet known who was ultimately responsible for the accident.
Officer K.D. Dozier, a member of the Houston Police Department, was responding to a Priority 2 call without emergency lights or sirens on. The collision happened, according to police, when the car carrying Madrano failed to yield the right of way.
Protocol for priority 2 calls, which usually deal with in-progress property crimes or threats to human welfare, is that police drive directly to the scene without lights or sirens on. However, there is still a chance Dozier is to blame for the accident. Dozier suffered a broken neck and other injuries in the wreck.
The Houston Police Department said that investigation into the crash, which happened near the couple's townhome, is still ongoing. Our sympathies go out to all of those that have been affected by this accident.
