Posted on Oct 19, 2011
Nila Webb Simmons, 82, died in an October 17, 2011 accident involving an 18-wheeler in Crosby, TX. The Harris County Sheriff's office said that Ms. Simmons disregarded a stop sign at Lindstrom Road and Highway 90. An oncoming truck collided with her car in the intersection, completely crushing about half of the car. Ms. Simmons died in the collision with the truck. The 79-year-old passenger in her car went to the hospital in critical condition.
The 18-wheeler sustained some damage to the front right side, including a broken headlight, in the unexpected collision. Authorities shut down inbound lanes of the highway while they responded to the accident.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrible accident. We sympathize too with the truck driver. While the truck driver wasn't at fault for the accident, he or she might be haunted by the tragic incident for some time. We feel too for the passenger critically injured in the car. Chances are that Ms. Simmons simply overlooked the sign, rather than deliberately disregarding it. But the results of the failure to observe the sign were so very costly to all involved. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Nila Webb Simmons.
