KIA Recalls Certain 2007-2008 Sorentos Because AirBag May Not Deploy

Posted on Sep 19, 2011

Kia Motors Corporation recalled certain 2007 and 2008 Sorento models manufactured between June 15, 2006 and November 27, 2007 because of a defect in the car's "occupant classification system" (OCS). The Kia Sorento OCS defect could cause the front passenger airbag to turn off and not deploy in the event of a wreck. The OCS defect could cause the airbag to turn off if an adult occupies the front passenger seat. The design of the Kia Sorento OCS is supposed to tell the airbag to turn off in limited circumstances that include when:

1. A small adult occupies the front passenger seat,
2. A child occupies the front passenger seat,
3. There is a child restraint system (car seat) in the front passenger seat, or
4. The front passenger seat has no occupant.

The defect in the Kia Sorento OCS could cause the OCS to misclassify an adult as a child or a car seat, and then turn off the airbag. Then, if the Kia Sorento experienced a collision, the front passenger airbag would not deploy and the front passenger would lose any protection that it could provide from the consequences of the wreck. This type of auto defect could be particularly serious, even fatal, in a frontal collision.

Kia Motors Corporation says that it will update the OCS module in affected Sorento models for free. The Kia Service Campaign number for this recall is SC076. If you own one of the affected Sorentos, you can call Kia's customer service line at 1-888-333-4542.

Unlike many recall notices, this one does NOT specifically state that no injuries or deaths have been reported from this defect. Clearly, this Kia Sorento OCS defect represents a real hazard to adult front seat passengers. Frontal crashes can be deadly. Without airbag protection, crash tests indicate disastrous results in frontal collisions even where the car travels as slow as 30 mph.
