Jerome Isaac arrested for setting a woman afire in Brooklyn elevator
Posted on Dec 20, 2011
Jerome Isaac, 47, faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and arson in the death of Deloris Gillespie, a 73-year-old woman who lived in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. He turned himself in Sunday after burning Ms. Gillespie to death on Saturday in a deadly elevator incident, claiming he killed her because she owed him money for chores.
According to neighbors, relatives, and friends, Deloris Gillespie was known for trying to help out those who were down on their luck. She had taken in Jerome Isaac some while back to try and help him, but dismissed him when she caught him stealing from her. Neighbors said that after leaving the shelter offered by Ms. Gillespie, Isaac had begun to look more unkempt and spent his time looking for cans to recycle in their Prospect Heights neighborhood. According to Ms. Gillespie's nephew, Isaac had recently posted a bill on her door of around $300 for a clean-up job.
On Saturday, Jerome Isaac was waiting when Deloris Gillespie returned to her Brooklyn building with arms full of groceries. As she opened the small elevator cab to exit to her 5th floor apartment, Isaac began methodically spraying her with a liquid that would ignite with disastrous consequences when he threw a Molotov cocktail into the elevator cab and then exited the building. Ms. Gillespie, cowering in the floor of the Brooklyn elevator cab after her face was sprayed with the burning liquid, quickly became engulfed in flames. She burned alive inside the small elevator cab just steps from her apartment door.
Surveillance videos in Ms. Gillespie's Brooklyn building captured the whole incident. Even hardened New York City homicide investigators wee stunned by the detached, methodical brutality of the horrific murder they witnessed on the tapes.
