HPD Officer Killed in Drunk Driving Accident with Illegal Immigrant
Posted on Jun 15, 2011
A deadly accident on Sunday claimed the life of Houston Police Department Officer Kevin Will.
Police say that 26-year-old Johoan Rodriguez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was driving with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit and had cocaine in his pocket when he plowed through the accident scene and hit Officer Will, 38.
Officer Will was talking with a witness of a motorcycle accident around 2 a.m. on Sunday when the Volkswagon Beetle driven by Rodriguez crashed through a police barricade. Officer Will reportedly pushed the witness out of the way before being struck by the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodriguez has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, felony evading and possession of a controlled substance. An immigration hold was placed on him and court records show that he had been previously deported before somehow re-entering the country.
Officer Will is survived by his wife, who is six months pregnant, and two children, 6 and 10. Our deepest sympathies go out to them and all those affected by this tragic accident.
