George Carroll of Melrose, MA Dies When Home Deck Collapses on Him
Posted on Oct 21, 2011
George Carroll, 78, of 21 Bow Street in Melrose, MA died October 12, 2011 when the deck of his home collapsed right on top of him. The 10' x 14' deck, which stood 6 feet above the ground and had support from only two slim poles, collapsed as George Carroll worked to make repairs on the old structure.
George Carroll and his son were working to level the deck when it suddenly sagged, then collapsed, trapping Mr. Carroll, Sr. underneath. Firefighters responded to the deck collapse call and set about lifting the fallen platform with inflatable air bags. Mr. Carroll received emergency transport to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, where he died before 3 p.m. from fatal injuries.
Paul E. Johnson, Melrose Building Commissioner, responded to the scene shortly after the deck collapse to inspect the damage. At the time of the interview, he said that it was unclear whether the deck had been up to code and that it was an older deck. He also said that the building department emphasizes the need to have professionals do things like make deck repairs, but that their thoughts were with the Carroll family after the tragic deck collapse. Our thoughts too are with the family, who are suffering the loss of Mr. Carroll, Sr. after this tragic deck collapse.
