Drunk driver kills bicyclist; drops license plate at NW Harris Co site
Posted on Jan 25, 2012
Jared James Thomas, 36, is being held at the Harris County Jail after a fallen license plate led police to his door. Bond is set at $35,000.
53-year-old Frank Corona, Jr. was riding a bicycle southbound on Jones Road near Fallbrook around 11:30 p.m. on Monday night. A driver in a van crashed into him and then fled the scene. Frank Corona, Jr. died from the injuries he received in the hit-and-run accident.
Jared James Thomas' efforts to flee the scene of the crime went for naught. During the crash, a license plate fell from the van and remained at the scene with the fallen bicyclist. Harris County authorities traced the plate to the owner of the van. The van's owner had loaned the vehicle to Jared Thomas' father and directed them to his home.
Sheriff's deputies found Jared James Thomas asleep on the stairway of the residence with the keys to the van underneath him. When they attempted to awaken and arrest him, Jared Thomas became violent. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and render aid. News reports of the incident don't mention a count for intoxication manslaughter.
The Houston wrongful death attorneys at Denena & Points express their deepest sympathies to the family of Frank Corona, Jr., so needlessly lost to a tragic DWI crash. Our hearts and our prayers are with you at this sad and difficult time.
