Daimler Trucks Recalls About 5,000 Freightliners for Faulty ESC System
Posted on Sep 20, 2011
Daimler Trucks North America has issued a recall for almost 5,000 Freightliner Trucks. The recalled Daimler trucks include the:
· Business Class M2,
· Cascadia, Century,
· Columbia,
· Coronado, and
· Sterling A-Line.
The trucks come from the 2006 through 2012 model years. The recalled Daimler trucks, manufactured from September 15, 2005 through September 1, 2011, contain Meritor Wabco Electronic Stability Control (ESC) systems. A defect in these ESC systems can cause the ESC to miscalculate slip angles under certain road and driving conditions.
The slip angle miscalculation could cause the ESC system to perceive an over steering event where none actually exists. Then the ESC system would apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle in order to correct the nonexistent over steering until the ESC module perceived the truck to be stable. Unfortunately, the ESC's attempt to create vehicle stability would actually create vehicle instability.
And if the truck driver couldn't react fast enough to the unexpected ESC intervention, the truck could deviate from the direction of intended travel. This might cause the truck to suddenly leave the road or enter another lane. In the end, the ESC intervention could cause the truck crash or truck rollover that an ESC system is actually designed to prevent.
The Daimler safety recall number for the faulty ESC system is FL-612. Daimler Trucks says it will replace the defective module free of charge. The company expects the actual safety recall to commence around March 30, 2012. Owners of the recalled Daimler trucks can call Daimler Trucks at 1-800-547-0712.
Truck rollover accidents occur almost daily. The causes of these accidents aren't always easy to determine after the fact, especially if the driver does not survive the accident to tell what happened. If you've been the victim of an unexplained truck rollover, either as the truck's driver or as someone struck by the truck as it rolled, a faulty ESC system might have been to blame.
