Chrysler Recall of 300,000 Minivans due to Chance of Unexpected Airbag Deployment

Posted on Aug 09, 2011

Chrysler announced a recall of almost 300,000 of its minivans because of a possible problem with sudden, unexpected airbag deployment. The company said that condensation from the air conditioner or heater could leak onto a sensor module. That sensor module might then activate a warning light, which could then trigger airbag deployment. Chrysler said that its dealers in North America would replace the problematic component at no charge.

  • The Chrysler recall affects certain 2008 Chrysler minivan models including the:
    Grand Voyager;
    Town and Country; and
    Dodge Grand Caravan.

We commend Chrysler on its voluntary recall. Airbags can save lives. But airbag deployment also causes some injuries. While most airbag injuries are minor, about 4% of airbag injuries are severe or even fatal. So you don't want your airbag to deploy unless it's to save you from the impact of a wreck. If you have an unexpected airbag deployment while you're driving, it could cause the very wreck from which it was designed to protect you.

If you have a Chrysler affected by the recall, you may want to take it in for repair now. With the exceptionally hot summer we‘ve been having in 2011, air conditioner condensation probably exceeds its usual levels. You don't want your sensor module to tell your airbag you're having a wreck, when all you're really having is a wickedly hot day.
