Posted on Nov 28, 2011
News of some of the violent and ugly incidents from the 2011 Black Friday mayhem may be enough to keep shoppers home next year to shop online instead. Risking the ire of an irate boss on Cyber Monday looks increasingly appealing if one can avoid the injuries and a fatality suffered by shoppers who chose to visit stores in person on Black Friday.
We list some of the more notable incidents below, and offer our sympathies to those injured by the Black Friday mayhem and our condolences to friends and family of the shopper who died amid the shopping frenzy.
Los Angeles, CA Wal-Mart: A woman tried to hold other shoppers at bay and keep them from the electronics products she coveted by discharging pepper spray into the fray. Her frenzied actions injured 20 people, including other women and children. Reportedly, she has now turned herself in to police.
Northern CA Wal-Mart: Armed robbers confront a family in a Wal-Mart parking lot and demand their purchases. When they refuse, a robber shoots a man. The man is hospitalized in critical condition. The family wrestled one robber to the ground. Police have him in custody and are reviewing surveillance tapes to identify at least three other suspects.
Fruitport Township, MI, Wal-Mart: A teenage girl was knocked down and trampled by several people in a rush to get to sale merchandise in the electronics section. The girl was hospitalized.
Kinston, NC, Wal-Mart: Off duty police officer quells shopping disturbance with pepper spray when customers tried to rush electronics department. One man arrested.
Toledo, OR, Wal-Mart: Police respond to at least 3 separate reports of fighting at the store. One incident involved a fight over $1.88 towels.
Florence, AL, Wal-Mart: Police use stun gun to subdue drunk and disorderly customer.
Upstate NY, Wal-Mart: 2 women injured and 1 man arrested after a fight breaks out at the store.
Kissimmee, FL, Wal-Mart: 1 man arrested after a fight breaks out at a jewelry counter.
South Charleston, WV, Target (not Wal-Mart): Man dies after suffering apparent heart failure while shopping for Christmas decorations. Shoppers blithely step over the fallen man and continue shopping.
Colorado Springs, CO, Wal-Mart: Bomb threat shuts down the store on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. No bomb found.
Port Clinton, OH, Wal-Mart: Drunk driver hits utility pole and knocks out power nearby. Authorities respond to evacuate hundreds of shoppers from blacked-out Wal-Mart. Drunk driver arrested.
Buckeye, AZ, Wal-Mart: Police punch out grandfather who was allegedly shoplifting video game.
You might be nursing your Black Friday shopping injuries at the moment. But retailers are celebrating. This was their biggest Black Friday ever. And possibly the bloodiest as well.
