Early Sunday morning at approximately 4:15 a.m., the balcony of a second-story condominium in Austin collapsed during a party. The accident happened just a few miles from downtown Austin at the Garden Court Condominiums.
At the time of the accident, 30 people were standing on the balcony. Twenty-three people sustained injuries that required medical treatment. The hospital staff at University Medical Center-Brackenridge treated the injured partygoers.
Although the injuries were not serious enough to be categorized as life threatening, five people remained at the hospital on Sunday afternoon. Some injured partygoers suffered from minor injuries, like scratches while others received treatment for more serious injuries, like fractures.
It is always unfortunate when a balcony collapses and causes injuries or death. A party where many guests congregate on the balcony can result in unintended accidents when the balcony proves incapable of holding the weight of those standing on it. A collapse of a balcony may occur because of a variety of reasons, including deterioration caused by age or exposure to the weather, which may impair the balcony’s structural stability.
At Denena & Points, we have represented clients injured in balcony accidents. One such case involved a balcony collapse in a Houston apartment complex.
