Automated Defibrillators Might Kill More than Save Hospital Patients

Posted on Nov 15, 2011

An article on the MSNBC site, reporting information from nonprofit Fairwarning, notes that follow up studies regarding the safety and effectiveness of automated dual-mode defibrillators used in the hospital setting come up short on results. The dual-mode defibrillators were widely adopted in hospitals a little over 10 years ago based upon a strong and enthusiastic recommendation by a committee of the American Heart Association.

But the Fairwarning report says that more than a quarter of the committee received money and other perks from the manufacturers of the dual-mode devices. The report also states that at the time the recommendation was issued no real data was available yet regarding the efficacy of the dual-mode automated defibrillators in the hospital setting.

And time has shown that survival rates for hospital patients suffering cardiac arrest are actually greater in the absence of the dual-mode devices. Various factors underlie the lack of reliability of the dual-mode devices in the hospital setting. But the fact remains that manual defibrillators have proven more effective in saving hospital patients over the past decade.

Studies indicate that as many as 10,000 patients might have died wrongfully in the past decade because hospitals relied on the dual-mode defibrillators.

The medical device product defect attorneys at Denena & Points sympathize with any who might have lost their loved ones to the ill-advised use of the dual-mode advice. We encourage you to contact an experienced medical device product defect attorney, like Chad Points or Tony Denena, for a free legal consultation if you would like advice on what you can do following your tragic loss.
