On August 13, a wreck in a construction zone involving a Toyota Prius and an eighteen-wheeler injured one person on the US 59 near the town of Splendora, Texas in Montgomery County. The accident occurred when the Prius became wedged between the truck and the concrete barrier used to separate traffic on each side of the highway. The rear tires of the eighteen-wheeler made contact with the side of the Prius, peeling the sheet metal off the driver's side of the vehicle.
The accident was similar to one that occurred a few days before involving an eighteen-wheeler and a vehicle near the same stretch of highway. The police believe that both accidents occurred because the drivers were unaware that after going over the overpass at FM 2090, the three lanes turned into two lanes within a few hundred feet. The police department intends to ask the construction company to adjust the configuration.
The driver of the Prius, a sixty-year-old woman from Texas City, sustained minor injuries. After the Splendora Fire Department was able to get her out of the vehicle by using the Jaws of Life, she was taken to Kingwood Hospital. Her passenger, an eighty-year-old woman, was unharmed. The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries.
