40-Year-Old Suffers Fatal Accident While Learning to Ride New Harley

Posted on Sep 07, 2011

On Monday, September 5, 2001 in Houston, Mr. Juan Carlos Villalobos was practicing riding his new Harley Davidson motorcycle in the parking lot of the Dilston House Apartments on Westheimer Road. About mid-afternoon, he lost control of the Harley Davidson and struck a parked Buick Park Avenue. Then he crashed into a brick wall next to a gate and suffered severe head trauma. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, but did not survive his injuries.

We send our condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Juan Carlos Villalobos. What a tragedy that he should suffer a motorcycle accident fatality in the prime of his life when all he wanted was to master his new bike and experience the excitement of driving a classic Harley Davidson. Unlike many new riders, Mr. Villalobos was acting responsibly and practicing in a parking lot, away from busy roads. He took proper responsible steps to avoid endangering others. It's inexpressibly sad that his responsible actions ended by endangering himself. We laud Juan Carlos Villalobos for his responsibility and care for others, and wish that he could have survived his unforeseen tragedy. The world will miss a rider possessing the degree of responsibility and care for others shown by Mr. Villalobos.

Mr. Villalobos' motorcycle accident fatality adds to the trend of recent years that shows a spike in bike accident deaths among riders aged 40 and above. More and more people over 40 are buying and riding motorcycles. It makes sense. Bikes offer much higher fuel economy than cars. They can maneuver more easily through gridlock. And they provide a higher degree of exercise and activity for drivers who want to stay fit.

Government agencies, accident lawyers and motorcycle enthusiasts are all becoming increasingly alarmed by the growing proportion of fatalities among riders aged 40 and over. But as with so many problems, an easy solution to the upward trend in accident deaths continues to elude us. If you have helpful ideas that can help us reverse this motorcycle accident fatality trend, your comments on this article would be most welcome.
