13 Injured in Houston Chain Reaction Multi-Vehicle School Bus Wreck

Posted on Sep 29, 2011

On Tuesday around 8 a.m. in Northwest Harris County, a privately-owned school bus carrying children to an alternative school crashed into the back of a pickup truck. The pickup truck was stopped on the North Beltway 8 feeder road at a red light at Ella Boulevard.

A 19-year-old boy who was on the bus said that the bus driver was trying to stop, but couldn't. He called the accident a "terrifying" experience. His mother, Rhonda Collins, said that he was undergoing X-rays because of back and neck complaints after the accident.

The bus, owned by AFC Transportation, was taking the children to the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP) when the accident occurred. When the bus ran into the pickup truck, the crash caused a chain reaction wreck in which 5 vehicles ultimately became involved.

The bus driver, 10 students from the bus, and 2 drivers from other vehicles went to hospitals with injuries. News accounts reported the 13 injured victims in stable condition. The Houston Police Department is investigating the cause of the multi-vehicle crash. At the time the news report was issued, the police had not yet been able to interview everyone involved in the chain reaction wreck to find out what happened.

We hope that no one suffered serious injuries from the multi-vehicle crash, and that all injured students and drivers will soon be healed from their unexpected chain reaction wreck wounds. This is the second major chain reaction wreck from Texas' congested road conditions that we've seen in two consecutive days that claimed young people as its victims. While most children are only to glad to miss a day of school if they can, and many adults feel the same way about work, no one wants to go so far as to suffer crash injuries in order to do so.
