Texas Auto Minimum Liability Insurance Limits Increase Effective January 1, 2011

The Texas Department of Insurance has issued a bulletin to auto insurance companies and Texas consumers reminding them that the minimum liability auto insurance limits increased to $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident, effective Janaury 1, 2011, up from $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. This increase resulted from the Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act, enacted in the 80th Texas Legislature, in 2007.

Many unscrupulous auto insurers have been arguing to insureds that the increase in coverage does not take effect until your renewal policy takes effect sometime AFTER January 1, 2011; however, the bulletin issued by the Department makes clear that the increase takes effect automatically.

You do not need to do anything to qualify for this increase in coverage. When your policy renews, you will see the increase in coverage on your auto insurance declarations page. However, in the interim, if you are involved in a Texas City car accident, call our office at 877.307.9500 and we can inform you of all of your rights. If you would like more information about car insurance regulations in Texas, please visit the Texas Department of Insurance's website.
