Do You Know How Many U.S. Children in Driveways are Hit by Cars Every Year?
- Injuries to children in driveways: Each year, approximately 5,000 children under age 14 suffer injury because a car has struck them in a driveway.
- Fatalities to children in driveways: More than 200 children below the age of 14 die each year when a car runs over them in a driveway.
These incidents, where cars strike young children in driveways, carry the label "backover" or "frontover" depending upon which end of the vehicle hit a child.
All of these driveover accidents are preventable. SafeKids.org suggests that before you get in your car, you take a few seconds to walk completely around the vehicle to check for children in driveways, and for toys, or pets. Accompany your children when they enter and exit a vehicle. And if children are playing nearby when you need to go somewhere in your car, ask the children to briefly step away from the area to where you can see them as you leave the driveway. (Older children could help shepherd younger children to safety.)
A Consumer Reports study reveals just how big a passenger vehicle's blind zones are when backing out. The largest blind zone, 50 feet in length, can hide the presence of 62 young children in driveways behind the vehicle. The size of the vehicles in relation to children and the drivers' long blind zones make the presence of nearby children difficult to detect.
