What is the ignition interlock device on a Texas DWI offender's car?
A:
An ignition interlock device is a mechanism slightly larger than the average cell phone. It gets wired into the ignition system of the convicted Texas DWI offender's vehicle. Installation of the IID only takes a short time. And once installed, the IID requires a breath sample before it will start the vehicle. The IID analyzes the driver's breath sample for alcohol.
If the IID detects alcohol on the driver's breath, it will not start the vehicle's engine. If the IID doesn't detect any alcohol in the driver's breath sample, it turns on the ignition for the driver. The IID will then periodically require breath samples from the driver to allow continued operation of the vehicle.
The IID is one more tool in the DWI enforcement arsenal designed to protect the public from the dangers of drunken drivers, alcohol-related crashes, and consequent debilitating injuries and tragic fatalities.
