What Happens if I Don'tPut License Plates on My Car in Conroe, TX?

A:

Conroe, TX accident lawyers have to tell you that, as it turns out, maybe nothing. Because of a lawmakers' oversight on new motor vehicle laws, no penalties attach to driving a vehicle without license plates. The new 234-page Texas motor vehicle violations laws were passed in May on the last day of the legislative session.

The new legislation placed the motor vehicle violations laws into separate chapters to try to align it with the updated Texas Transportation Code. But the legislation forgot to attach the $200 fine to driving a vehicle without license plates. (Oops!)

So even though the law still makes it a violation of the Code to drive around without license plates, it attaches no penalties to the violation. If you receive a citation for driving a vehicle without license plates under the new law, your fine for that violation could be... $0. As you might see, enforcement may present a problem.

The next legislative session occurs in 2013. So unless the Texas governor calls a special legislative session to correct this motor vehicle violation penalty oversight, you might be free to drive around without any license plates on your car until sometime in 2013 or later.

To our Conroe, TX accident lawyers, lost revenue presents one of the smaller concerns relating to this oversight. We could picture several other problematic issues resulting from strategic use of this legal loophole by unethical or negligent drivers.
