What are the recommended four stages of child passenger safety?
A: 1. Rear-Facing Seat: Infants stay rear-facing as long as possible - to the upper weight limits of the harness - but never forward-facing before their first birthday and 20-22 pounds. NHTSA now recommends that you keep your child in a rear-facing seat until they are as close to 3 years old as possible.
2. Forward-Facing Seat: Toddlers go forward-facing in a five-point harness until the upper limits of the harness, usually 40-80 pounds. In NHTSA's new CHild Safety Seat Guidlelines, they recommend that children stay in a forward-facing 5-point harness until they are 7 years old.
3. Booster Seat: Children from about age 7 to 12 and up to 4'9" tall and 100 pounds.
4. Adult Safety Belt: From 4'9" and taller and over 100 pounds.
