What are my risk factors for vaginal prolapse?
A:
Over the years, medicine has identified several risk factors for vaginal prolapse. Some patients have only a few of these characteristics. A few patients may have none at all. But a majority of vaginal prolapse patients tend to have one or more of these risk factors:
* They have given birth more than once (vaginal delivery particularly increases risk);
* They have given birth to at least one child of a fairly high birth weight;
* Obesity;
* They engaged in high impact sports like basketball;
* Hysterectomy;
* Genetic predisposition (if it runs in your family, you generally have a higher risk);
* Previous surgeries;
* Age (your chances of having a prolapse increase about 40% with each decade);
* Chronic constipation or other conditions causing repeated straining; and
* Repeated heavy lifting.
Our medical device liability lawyers have also seen some statements that smoking and menopause seem to increase your chances of having a prolapse, but we were unable to locate good medical support for these assertions.
