How much chlorine exposure is safe?

A:

The government allows up to 4 ppm (parts per million) of chlorine in our drinking water. Chlorine in our drinking water at levels exceeding 4 ppm can result in throat and stomach irritation, nausea and vomiting. 3 to 6 ppm of chlorine gas in air can begin to irritate the eyes. At 15 ppm of chlorine exposure in the air, people experience burning sensations in their respiratory tracts. At 30 ppm, people also begin to experience difficulty breathing, chest pains, coughing and excess fluid in the lungs. Exposure to 430 ppm for half an hour will kill you.

Pool companies usually recommend putting between 1.5 to 3 ppm of chlorine into your pool water. This equates to adding about 1 pound of such chlorine-based pool treatments as Shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water every two weeks. On average, 1 liter of water absorbs 3.26 grams of chlorine. Anything above this amount will tend to escape back into the air as chlorine gas.

We need chlorine to help purify our waters. We just don't need very much of it in any one body of water.
