A study by the Department of Transportation (DOT) uncovered numerous reasons for motorcycle crashes. The study revealed that in a six-year period, from 1990 to 1996, approximately 11,000 riders died and 255,000 sustained injuries in motorcycle wrecks. These figures increased by nearly 22 percent for the years 1998 to 1999.
The study revealed that motorcycle wreck fatalities occurred more often in certain situations. For instance, fatalities tended to increase on rural roads, at night, and on undivided roadways.
Because a motorcyclist has limited protection other than a helmet or protective clothing, substantial injuries may result from a crash. Common injuries include spinal injuries, road burns, and traumatic brain injury. Treatment may include physical therapy or surgery, and long-term treatment is sometimes necessary.
