Why is it that so many people in Houston, TX still don't wear seat belts?
Why is it that so many people in Houston, TX still don't wear their seat belts?
I mean it just takes a second to buckle up. It takes a fraction of a second to unbuckle. Seat belts are not uncomfortable. Once I have my seat belt on, I don't even notice it's there. And be it ever so humble, the seat belt vastly increases your chances of surviving an accident.
So what is it? Could someone tell me? Is it just not cool? Do we just forget? What? At the bottom of this page, there's a button you can click to respond. If you know why people just refuse to wear the seat belt, let me know. Because I'm puzzled.
Maybe it's because as personal injury attorneys we just see so many people who lost their loved ones needlessly to wrecks for want of a buckled seat belt. Or maybe because we've seen so many people who now have crippling life long injuries because they weren't wearing their seat belts and they got ejected from their vehicles in a wreck. I just can't imagine driving off without buckling up my seat belt.
I can understand people who might be afraid to fly, but get on a plane anyway. Their chances of fatality from an accident remain statistically quite low. I can understand people afraid of roller coasters who see the potential risks, but step onto the rides anyway. Their risks of injury or fatality also remain extremely low. But I don't understand people who don't buckle themselves into their seat belts. The risks of injury or fatality in an accident, in spite of all our advances in safety equipment, remain extremely, terrifyingly high if you don't wear your seat belt.
We hear the statistics all the time. And accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. Most Houston, TX accidents happen close to home. And many start out with little mishaps: hitting a curb, having a tire blowout, over-steering, or taking a curve just a tiny bit too fast.
Just this weekend, sandwiched between news of the Texas wildfires and recaps of the events of September 11, 2001, I kept seeing accounts of Houston, TX area citizens brought to untimely and tragic ends because they weren't wearing seat belts and they got ejected from their vehicles. These accounts all represented single vehicle accidents where the driver lost control and the vehicle flipped or rolled. Single vehicle rollover accidents that eject occupants from the vehicles stand out as the single most fatal type of accident. We see examples of such accidents in the greater Houston, TX area practically every day. And we still won't wear our seat belts. Why is that?
