Trucker Fatigue Causes Truck Wrecks

Driver fatigue is a common cause of truck wrecks. Data from an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) study shows that many truckers—three-quarters of those who participated in the survey—admitted to driving longer hours than allowed by law and a significant number of drivers in another IIHS survey admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. Not surprisingly, truck fatigue has resulted in serious traffic wrecks.

The Federal Motor Safety Administration has rules and regulations that restrict truckers. Hours-of-Service (HOS) Regulations set the guidelines for how long a trucker can work without taking a break. Although hours-regulations are in place, trucker fatigue remains a significant problem. Analysis by the National Transportation Safety Board indicates that trucker fatigue causes between 30 to 40 percent of all truck wrecks.
