Thousands Die Every Year in Alcohol-Related Car Wrecks

Every day people die in alcohol-related crashes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), thirty-two people die in such crashes each day. That is one death every forty-five minutes. Over the course of a year, alcohol-related crashes result in the deaths of thousands of people.

DWI accidents are a serious problem that affects cities and counties around the nation. In Harris County in Texas, a report by the Houston/Harris County Office of Drug Policy found that alcohol-related wrecks caused 60 percent of all traffic fatalities. The problem of alcohol-related crashes has become so pressing that the Houston DWI task force receives $480,000 a year in grants to pay for the overtime officers must work to catch and process intoxicated drivers.*
