Stability control systems, sensors that communicate with a vehicle’s computer when weight shifts or will shift, is one of the latest mechanism that the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) strongly supports. The NHTSA would like the systems installed on all tractor-trailer trucks, especially tank trucks.
The technology is not new—it has been available for about five years. However, recent tests conducted by the NHTSA and the University of Michigan discovered that stability control systems could prevent nearly 4,400 injuries every year.
A stability control system takes away control from the driver when it senses an imbalance resulting from shifting weight. When a stability control system senses a shift in weight, the system overrides the driver’s control of the gas pedal. The system tells the computer to apply the brakes. The driver regains control after the elimination of the threat.
Because of the benefits of stability control systems, manufacturers are required by law to install the safety mechanism on all passenger vehicles. Current law, however, does not require truck manufacturers to do the same. Consequently, this leaves many trucks at risk of rolling over. Officials with the NHTSA believe that the system will decrease the number of tractor-trailer rollovers. The NHTSA expects to present evidence in support of this finding at a National Safety Board hearing on how to prevent tank truck rollovers.
