Size and Weight Restrictions on Large Commercial Trucks

Large commercial trucks pose a risk to other drivers on the roadway. A 2007 study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that passengers in vehicles are injured and killed in truck wrecks more often than truck drivers. This is because the mere size and weight of a truck can cause serious, life-threatening injuries or death in a truck accident.

The size and weight of large commercial trucks is subject to federal and state regulation. Federal law provides the following regulations:

  • States may not impose a length limitation on a truck tractor-semitrailer combination of less than 48 feet, or the grandfathered limit for the state.
  • A state may not impose a length limitation of less than 28 feet on a semitrailer or trailer operating in a truck tractor-semitrailer-trailer combination.
  • A state cannot regulate the width of a large commercial truck to more or less than 102 inches.

If you have been seriously injured in a Texas truck wreck, you may be entitled to damages. Call a Houston truck accident attorney at Denena & Points at 713-807-9500 or 877-307-9500.
