Rollover Accidents and the High Costs of Catastrophic Injury

Rollover accidents generate more catastrophic injuries and more fatalities than other types of accidents. This holds true for passenger cars, SUVs, light trucks, and commercial trucks across the board. These disproportionately severe rollover accident injuries result from unusual factors you generally won't encounter outside of a rollover accident.

The only parts of your passenger vehicle designed to roll are its tires. The rest of the vehicle just wasn't meant to roll. Our Texas City personal injury lawyers have noticed that various design factors give some vehicles a more than average propensity to rollover. And a lack of good rollover resistance standards means that the vehicle's design phase probably didn't give much attention to the chances of rollover accident injuries.

Your chances of having a rollover accident might be higher than you think. Especially if you drive a Jeep or an SUV:

*Inherent design choices make your car more unstable than many other vehicles;
*Your car might lose its stability on turns or curves and rollover; or
*It might lose stability and roll if you drive over a curb or strike a fixed object.

And some glaring design errors, like
*The Ford Explorer Firestone Tire combination, or
*The choice of Dunlop Axiom tires for the Ford Aerostar,
*Make certain vehicles particularly prone to rollovers.

Two accidents in our greater Houston area during the summer of 2011 serve as classic illustrations of what happens during a rollover. In one accident, a speeding vehicle hit an inner highway wall, lost stability and rolled onto its side. Lack of rollover resistance crushed parts of the car. The rollover ejected the critically injured driver onto the road.

In another rollover accident, the car's driver had to be flown to emergency care for his rollover accident injuries. News photos of the rollover wreck show a crushed and shredded vehicle clearly not designed to resist the stresses of rollover. I don't think anyone really questions that we need higher rollover resistance standards for our vehicles. The difficulties seem to lie in how to define and implement them.

Until we get better rollover resistance standards for our cars and trucks, we'll continue to suffer extreme injuries and fatalities from rollover accidents. And victims of these horrific rollover accident injuries will continue to need the help of Board Certified Texas City personal injury lawyers who have extensive experience helping other rollover accident victims recover for their losses. If you need our help, please feel free to call. We can offer you a free legal consultation to discuss your problem, and our free book that explains some of the procedures and pitfalls of Texas accident claims.
