New Study Shows That Helmets May Help Prevent Spinal Cord Injuries

A new study released this month will turn conventional wisdom on its ear, and encourage a new generation of riders to wear a helmet at all times when riding on a motorcycle.

The study, completed by the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, used motorcycle crash data from 2002 to 2006. They found that in addition to helping avoid brain injuries, wearing a helmet helps motorcyclists avoid spine injuries.

Data in the study indicated that those wearing a helmet would be up to 22% less likely to sustain a severe spinal cord injury than those not wearing a helmet. This is in direct opposition to many who mistakenly aver that the hard shell of a helmet may actually contribute to spinal cord injuries.

This new study means that there is literally no reason not to wear a helmet when you are driving or riding a motorcycle in the Houston, TX area. Spinal cord injuries in Texas motorcycle accidents, as well as head or brain injuries, can be devastating to you and your entire family.

With negligent drivers, who may be drunk or distracted, lurking around every corner, you are nearly always in danger of a Houston motorcycle injury on a bike. It is important that you take every precaution to ensure you are as safe as possible at all times by wearing a helmet.

If even your best attempts at safety cannot help you or a loved one avoid a serious wreck with a negligent driver, and you are injured in a motorcycle accident Texas, it is important that you take immediate action to protect your legal rights. Contacting an attorney is always a good first step.
