More Houston Area Children's Lives Lost to Tragic Traffic Accidents

You may have noticed a large number of recent news accounts of Houston area children, teens, and young people whose lives were tragically claimed or forever changed by devastating traffic accidents. A recently issued report places Houston at the number 4 spot in the nation for traffic congestion, so I guess we can expect higher incidences of traffic accidents and delays. But it seems that our traffic problems take a terrible and disproportionate toll on our young people.

Yesterday, for instance, news outlets reported the loss of three Porter High School teens in a devastating wreck on a narrow, winding road. 3 families mourn the loss of children taken untimely from their loved ones. The brother of one of the victims survived the car accident. His life will be forever changed by the memory of the wreck that claimed his brother's life. And an entire school will have a tragic memory of lost friends marking their high school years.

And in Houston itself, an uncle accidentally ran over and killed his young niece, Fernanda Rodriguez, while backing his Ford pickup truck out of a driveway. He could not see her behind the truck and didn't even know that she had toddled out of the house behind him. Unfortunately, a surprisingly large number of children suffer injuries or lose their lives because the large blind spots behind pickup trucks as they back out prevent drivers from knowing that the children are nearby. And it's usually a friend or relative who accidentally backs over a child in the driveway. But it probably won't comfort the aunt and uncle and other family of young Fernanda, taken far too early from this Earth, that such accidents are a common problem. They'll have lives forever scarred because of the loss of their young and innocent Fernanda to this blind spot issue.

The emotional consequences of these accidents that claim our youth cannot easily be calculated. And they have physical and financial consequences that people don't necessarily think about when they read the news reports. And families who've lost their young loved ones often find it difficult to obtain the compensation that could help them move forward with their lives again after their catastrophic accidents.

At our Houston accident law firm, we take families through the difficult process of finding compensation and closure after their tragedies. We see the full emotional toll that these tragic accidents take on the surviving family members. It's a high toll, and difficult to see.

But our goal is to help these grieving family members in any way that we legally can to recover from their losses and regroup. No amount of financial restitution can ever compensate you for the loss of a valued family member. But it can help make you financially whole again, so that you can begin to regroup and move forward with life after the devastating accident and its aftermath.
