Recently I was out of town taking depositions in a case over several days. During the third day of the depositions one of the defense attorneys in the room got an email. He had to stop the deposition and "go make a call." If you have never been through a deposition it is a formal process. We are "on" and "off the record" throughout the proceeding. We try to stay on the record and moving through the process as much as possible, only taking breaks about every hour and a half or so. It is fairily unusual to call a halt to the proceedings for a simple phone call. Well, later it was revealed why that call was so important. A client of this attorney had just had a fatality accident involving one of the company truck drivers. The truck driver was in a bad wreck somewhere on the West Coast and at least one driver of a vehicle the 18 wheeler hit was dead. This lawyer changed his plans and instead of going back to his office he flew out that afternoon to California. The company had lawyers on stand-by. No doubt that attorney would direct the investigation for the company. The ability to have the attorneys that will either defend the case or work closely with the attorneys defending the case gives the corporation a huge advangtage in pre-suit negotiations and then when in litigation. This advantage will no doubt be a difficult one to overcome. Has the attorney been selected as Rising Star (under 40 years of age) or a Super Laywer? It is vitally important that your attorney is thought well of by his peers. If lawyers refer the lawyer you are considering hiring their cases, it is a good sign.

3. Results in your particular type of case. Don't hire a criminal defense attorney for your personal injury case. Hire someone that focuses their practice on your type of case. If you have a personal injury case, you need a Board Certified Personal Injury Lawyer.

4. Resources. How much do you think it costs for a company or insurance company to mobilize a crisis response team? It costs a lot of money. You must have a law firm that can go head-on without blinking against the other side. The firm you choose must have the resources to weather the storm and go on offense.
