GM Recalls 1.5 Million Vehicles Over Potentially Flammable Wiper Fluid

For the second time in as many days, a major U.S auto manufacturer has announced a recall to fix a potentially devastating problem.  Following Chrysler's recall of approximately 600,000 vehicles for an electrical problem with its sliding doors, which could lead to a fire, General Motors announced today that it is recalling a1.5 million 2006 to 2009 model year trucks, SUVs, and sedans to address a potential fire risk.  The problem affects the windshield wiper fluid heating system.  This is the second recall in 2 years by GM to address this problem.

GM is aware of at least 5 incidences of fires.  Under the recall, GM will disable the heated washer fluid system module that could lead to fires and pay owners and lessees $100 each for disabling the feature.

The recall covers the 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; 2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; 2007-2009 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL; 2007-2009 Saturn Outlook; and 2009 Chevrolet Traverse.

In 2008 GM recalled more than 900,000 vehicles because of the heated windshield wiper fluid system.  The supplier of the system went out of business, which GM claims was the only supplier of the technology, preventing it from working with another supplier.

If you or someone you know has a vehicle affected by the recall, it is extremely important that you contact your dealer to make an appointment to have the system disabled.  Do not wait to get a recall notice.  Contact a Houston defective auto lawyer today for any further assitance.
