Helmets protect motorcycle riders from serious brain damage or death. In Texas, the law does require that riders under age 21 wear a helmet. Some riders, however, are exempt from the law. If a rider is at least twenty-one years old, and has completed a motorcycle safety and training course, or if the rider has a health insurance plan that covers injuries sustained in a motorcycle wreck, the rider can opt not to wear a helmet while riding on a public street or highway.
Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle will protect your head from injury. Motorcycle riders, however, are prone to other injuries besides brain trauma. Common injuries sustained in motorcycle wrecks include abrasions, fractures, and spinal cord damage. Regardless of whether you were wearing a helmet, you may be entitled to compensation if another person caused the wreck.
