Can Good ESC Technologies Give Us a World of Zero Driver Fatalities?
This summer I came across an article rating the safety (or lack of it) of the many different passenger vehicles available to us. The ratings article mentioned a handful of vehicles, all SUVs, that had ZERO driver fatalities over a three-year period from 2006 to 2009. That's truly remarkable if you take a moment to consider just the number of single-vehicle fatal crashes we see each week. The article seemed to attribute the lack of driver fatalities to a combination of SUVs' size and weight advantages in a wreck and the leading edge ESC technologies used in these particular vehicles. Since I've been writing about ESC technology recently, I decided to take another look at the article.
The zero driver fatality SUVs comprise the:
Audi A6 4-door 4-wheel-drive SUV,
Mercedes E-Class 4-door 4-wheel-drive SUV,
Toyota Sienna,
Ford Edge,
Nissan Armada,
Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and
Land Rover LR3.
The place of these SUVs in a zero driver fatality classification for three years running represents an amazing improvement over just a few years before when SUVs garnered so much attention for their high rollover rate and deadly crash statistics. Even now, news accounts regularly report fatal SUV rollover wrecks.
Someday technology may give us a zero fatality and zero accident injury driving world. Who knows? Maybe technology will finally give us a Star Trek type transporter, and we won't have to drive at all. But until we are lucky enough to experience that accident and fatality free environment, you can call on me if you need specialized, dedicated legal help after an accident on our roads.
