Besides Victims, Does Anybody Care about Safe Trucks and Buses?

In 1999 in the city of New Orleans a horrific bus crash claimed the lives of 22 people. Not only were those lives taken too early, but the lives of the families of those victims were forever damaged. After this catastrophy, the National Transportation Board convened a public form on issues related to the trucking and busing industries.

What came of this forum? 400 recommendations from the NTSB. Recommendations? What about some meaningful actions that have a real impact on our safety?

Well after a decade of more catastrophic injuries and deaths the NTSB simply could not ignore the carnage any longer. I suppose there is a tipping point for everything and today the NTSB convenes two more days of public discussions regarding the same issues it discussed in 1999. The tipping point this time was another tragic bus accident in New York that claimed the lives of 15 people and injured many others. Originally, the bus driver claimed a truck driver cut him off causing the wreck. Now, the evidence is pointing to driver fatigue.

The 1999 public forum focused on issues such as driver training, fatigue, licensing, health and safety records. The hearings also included discussion of safety technologies to take dangerous drivers off of the road and prevent accident. These same topics will be discussed in these hearings.

Both Tony Denena and I, Chad Points, hope that these talks produce REAL ACTION that results in safer roads and highways. The time for recommendations is way past due. As a former truck driver I know first hand the issues that face truckers and their companies. But those issues can never become more important than public safety. Let us hear from you.
